Looking back through all the pictures I have growing up, I’ve never come across a single picture of me actually playing a sport. Lots of me standing in my uniform with a forced smile, but not a single shot of me playing hockey, baseball, soccer, football or even golf. Once I started taking photography seriously the answer as to why that was became obvious. Getting good pictures of actions sports is a lot harder than most people think. The lighting is seldom very good, the players aren’t paying any attention to where the camera might be, and most importantly the entire process is both unpredictable and unrepeatable. If you miss a shot, there’s no asking everybody if they can just back up and do it again.
